Splash screens

Ground floor windows acrylic rain splash shields, in aluminium profiles. One of these days the house is all finished. Oh, the big window still to be done. Comercial Vera here I come. Well, tomorrow. Maybe. Mañana.

Still to be done

(This house has no gutters, so rain splashes from the roof onto the pavement. If you look in Antas when it rains they all have plastic bags in front of their doors.)

Ow, and the window on the terrace. TWO more!

AutumnLeaves for Windows 2022 (24 February 2022)

Oldie nr.3 rescued from the Depths of Time: AutumnLeaves for Windows 10!

First released in 1999, it's 21 years since the last update, when Windows2000 and NT ruled. (They didn't.)
And still Windows 10 does not know about anti-aliasing or PNG files. Only those not-so-good old BMP bitmap files without transparency. Engineer Jansen is only half amused, and not even that.

Snow for Windows 2021 (21 December 2021)

After 20 years: new Snow for Windows! It was ready before Xmas, but Microsoft makes a bloody mess of its developer registration and submission processes. So, no Snow for Windows this Christmas.

Another silly window

Another one. See how the inside is lower than the outside? Completely ridiculous.

These windows are very thick, about 5cm, and are made to fit the window frame very precisely. Which is wrong, because when the window opens or closes the outside edge touches the frame, and thus splinters either the window sill or the edge of the window, or both. Here both happened. Hence the sort of complicated fracture that needed repair.

Made a groove in the window frame with a chisel, mounted an aluminium profile sunken in the wood, almost flush with the window. Now it does not touch the frame when opening or closing. Also "chamfered" the edge of the window a bit.

And mounted the alu profiles to keep the rain out, this also is, and hopefully was, a leaky window.

Silly windows

We have windows that are more or less well made. Theres one thing that is not great: when it rains they leak: water passes under the windows. Can you see why, as engineer Jansen did? (These windows open to the inside.)

Yes, the window sill is highest outside, and every step to the inside is one centimeter lower. So any water that reaches the underside of the windows will want to come inside, and it does. Very silly.

There are wooden slats at the bottom of the windows, even with anti-capillary grooves, but they don't work, as the window sill is quite wide and horizontal. It should have been slightly tilted so water drains away. It isn't, and the water doesn't, and will reach the bottom of the windows, and leak inside. More than enough to thoroughly soak a big bath towel.

Engineer Jansen screwed an extra aluminium L-profile onto the window sill, and attached a U-profile onto the bottom of the windows, so water will drain off off the U-profile, on the outside of the L-profile. There it will drain away. At least it should not reach the inside of the house any more.

Now eagerly awaiting rain

Shutters, mosquito screens and oil

Some people may think we're lazing in the pool all day, but at least for one of us that is not true. There are some shutters, screens and windows to do up. Not seen sandpaper or brush in at least ten years, so high time to sand off the old dry wood stain, and apply a nice Tung oil. (These are the windows and shutters of the kitchen, at the side of the house.)

Shiny!

 Now for the windows themselves..

Garage Windows

Oh, one of the little tasks that had been halted due to the installation of the garage door and the doing-up of the main windows of the house is the doing-up of the simple white windows, shutters and frames of the workshop/garage. They suffered the damp early this year a lot, and the paint flaked off massively. The wood itself has barely survived, thanks to our ventilation measures.

With paint you can choose between acrylic, alkyd, unless you want to spend a lot of money on polyurethane paint. Not in Spain. Here you can choose between acrylic. En now and then polyurethane.

Those paints don't especially like each other. You cannot paint over the one with the other. We did not have much choice (see above), so acrylic it is. And sanding heavily. Which was not easier due to the fact meanwhile the rejas (grills) had been installed, so you can no longer sand the frame with the machine. And no, those rejas cannot be removed. Which is the idea, actually.

Oh, and primer. Quite unknown in Spain as well. Only a specialist shop had one brand. On the tin it said that for wood you first need yet another primer product for best results, but we gave that the finger.

And the "glazing bars", the small wooden slats that keep the glass in place: never properly painted, and so pretty tired. I removed them, and the glass panes, so we can paint the entire window, even the corners behind the glass. The window panes were standing against the wall, and then smashed with an iron thing dropping on them, smashing a few. Lucky we now had a spare window, which had been replaced by the garage door, so that can now donate glass and slats.

Yes, we still have a week and a half left.

Fly Screens 5

Now the big windows of the bedroom and living on the first floor, on the east side. No old fly screens, though they definitely have been here, seeing the evidence...

I counted 50, weighed them: 3g. All together these weigh 36 grams, so ca. 600 staples.

Fly screen 4b

Yesterday: 123 staples. Well, no. As you ar sanding, more show up. 8 more!

Zoomba and the poor pink paw

We did not see it happen, but it did. This little energetic, acrobatic creature managed to break a toe. On flat grassland. Wooshed after a ball, and right when you don't watch and mind your own business your dog comes limping back, holding up her paw. She does this too when a nasty little thorny seed attaches itself to her paw, so we can unpick it. Here there was nothing to unpick, this time.

We carried her home, all 18 kilos. She was still wooshing around, chasing the cat in the garden, jumping up and down the couch, and everything. Still, the next day, Sunday, of course, it had not bettered, and she was still limping. Call the vet, weekend service. Got there at 12:00. Saw doctor by 13:00. It was clear no main bones were hurting, but it is difficult to see if a toe is broken. So, let's make an x-ray.

The x-ray machine had just gotten a new Windows computer. And yes, that is problematic. It had been switched off for a day, and it needed to update itself. The update took ages, and failed. Then, Windows restores the previous situation, apparently, and that takes even more ages. Unbelievable that after twenty years this bloody Microsoft company still produces ABSOLUTE SHITE. We left the vet at four, minus €250, but with a nice photo en new experiences.

No doubt it's broken. And here she is, with her pink bandages. She needs to REST 4-6 WEEKS, not run around, very short walks, and absolutely no jumping on and off couches, bed, etc.

This dog? Oh dear.
